 Oct 25,2019            Friday                                      7 a.m. SHARP! * NGC Field Trip Transportation Member Car Pooling @ St Thomas Aquinas Church, Nahant New England Flower Exchange & Encore Boston Harbor Casino Garden Tour with Optional Lunch at the at the member’s expense Come join fellow Nahant Garden Club members to see what the New England Flower Market is all about.  The Chelsea location opened in early 2017, with the majority of the vendors that did business at the former Boston Flower Exchange.  It is all about, Fresh Flowers, Greens, Plants, Floral Supplies and Much More.  We will continue onto the New Encore Boston Harbor Casino in Everett for a Private 1hour Walking Tour with Patrick Chadwick, who was nicknamed “the “Shrub Whisper” by the Boston Globe and his staff.  They will walk us though the Casino to view the inside Flower Arrangement/s and then continue the tour outside to the Harbor Walk and Garden Grounds and learn about how the transformation took place to make the grounds what they are today. New England Flower Exchange, 260 2nd St, Chelsea, MA Encore Boston Harbor Casino, Everett, MA Lunch at Floramo's Restaurant, Chelsea, MA at the member’s expense. The Tour is limited to 25 people and you need to pre-register no later than Thursday October 17, 2019 to Kim Edwards, Chair and advise if you plan to join the group for lunch.

Nov 14, 2019                        Thursday                                                      6 p.m. Thanksgiving Holiday Arrangement Presentation @ The Nahant Village Church, 27 Cliff St., Nahant Janice Quinn, from the MGH Floral Shop, will design some Thanksgiving Centerpieces using a variety of Garden Materials.  These skills can be used in everyday floral design.

  • The Nahant Garden Club will be selling tickets to our ”Sounds of the Season” Holiday House Tour that will take place on Saturday, Dec 7, 2019.

  • There will also be some Special Creations by The Nahant Garden Club Members and Boutique Committee on sale.

Featuring wreaths, fresh centerpieces, swags, boxwood trees, a variety of holiday decorations, and ornaments in addition to unique Holiday Gifts.  Many items will be handmade by the Boutique Committee.  The Boutique will be a unique event and just the place to find that something special for your own home or to find a gift for someone special.  The money raised at this event goes to help fund various projects of the Club.

The Toys for Tots Coordinator working with the Nahant Fire Department is Deborah Gates.

Cancelled due to lack of participation. Transportation Member Car Pooling @ St Thomas Aquinas Church, Nahant The Festival of Trees, displayed in the Hunnewell Building, offers beautifully decorated holiday trees, donated and decorated by local businesses, garden clubs, and individuals.  Visitors “vote” with their raffle tickets, in hopes of winning a tree at the end of the festival.  The Snow Village at Elm Bank is a wonderful addition to the holiday spirit of the Festival of Trees.

 Jan 23, 2020                         Thursday                                              Noon Celebrate the Lunar New Year through Flowers in Vietnam @ The Knights of Columbus, Nahant Come meet the people of Vietnam and learn about their history and culture as we travel the country during the Lunar New Year celebrations by way of our Garden Club Member Karen Fitzgerald’s travel photographs.  This holiday, also known as Tet, welcomes the arrival of Spring and is celebrated through family gatherings and flowers.

Feb 27,2020                         Thursday                                                       Noon Isabella Stewart Gardner *Joint Program NGC & The Nahant Woman’s Club @ The Knights of Columbus, 17 Relay Yard, Nahant Character reenactor Jessa Piaia presents a dramatic portrayal set in 1910, seven years after the opening of Fenway Court, the house built and designed for her art collection.  A recognized leader of Boston’s emerging salon scene, Mrs. Gardner, within characteristic verve and candor, relates episodes about her luminous circle of family and friends, relives journeys to exotic lands, and shares other potentially scandalous encounters.

 NEW INVITATION from SWIM to the NGC    Apr 14, 2020 Tuesday 7 p.m. Butterfly & Earth Day Talk with SWIM @ The Nahant Public Library, 340 Nahant Road, Nahant, MA A SWIM and the Nahant Public Library’s herbarium and nature program has put together a Butterfly Talk with Scott Santino, a Naturalist at the Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary in Ipswich, MA.  He has been leading programs for MASS Audubon since 1999, ked natural history tours locally, around New England and the East Coast, as well as to other national and international destinations for Mass Audubon.  Topics about which he especially enjoys
teaching include birds, butterflies, vernal pools, mammal tracking and the ecology of the Ipswich River.

CANCELLED!! - Apr 23, 2020                        Thursday                                                    10 a.m. Arbor Day Awards & Flower in a Bag with our Fellow Members @ The Nahant Village Church, 27 Cliff St., Nahant Members are asked to bring a vase and purchase of flowers from the grocery store using a “Brown Bag”.  Each member that participates will be given a number when they drop off their Bag at the beginning of the meeting.  We will draw numbers to pick a Members Brown Bag (You cannot pick your own bag.  That wouldn’t be any fun!) and then proceed to arrange contents.  At the end of the session all arrangements will be on display on the main table for all to view.  Member’s will then reclaim their original vase and flowers to take home and enjoy!

*Members should bring an Apron, Lazy Susan, and Floral Shears.

Linda Lipton is a writer, storyteller, former art and design teacher, and avid do-it- yourself gardener from Salem; she was featured in the Summer 2018 issue of North Shore Home magazine.  She will explain how to achieve designer results in a DIY Garden using the design elements and principles to create garden rooms.

We will visit the Parlee Farm Garden, where they plant over 10 shades of ‘Benary Giant’ zinnias, 5 varieties of beautiful sunflowers, and many different gorgeous dahlias and gladiolus.  You can pick your own flowers – they will supply us with the Bucket & Shears and will wrap them up for you.  If you prefer there are bunches of "freshly fresh" picked flowers every morning that are available at their Farm stand.

CANCELLED!! - Aug 20, 2020                                  Thursday                                            9 a.m. A day of Inspiration & Relaxing Lunch at Pickity Place, Mason, NH *NGC Field Trip Transportation Member Car Pooling @ St Thomas Aquinas Church, Nahant

Since 1786 this quaint little red cottage has graced the hills of southern New Hampshire, seemingly untouched by time. The enchanting cottage was chosen by Elizabeth Orton Jones as the model for her illustrations in Little Red Riding Hood (Little Golden Books, 1948).  Explore the kitchen garden and take in the sweet smell of basil, the sharp peppery flavor of nasturtium, or the intoxicating aroma of English lavender.  You are encouraged to "please handle the herbs”, after which we will enjoy the inspiration of the culinary garden’s creation of a five course gourmet herbal luncheon.

Note: Depending upon time we may stop at the Largest Hosta Farm in New England.
